Piyut Time Festival: ‘Women as Paytanim’

123

Featuring Rona Kenan and Maureen Nehedar

This performance highlights the special contribution of women to the art of Piyut.

Throughout the years, paytanim were normally male and hardly ever female, even though women played a considerable role in the vocal music of various Jewish communities.

Our Piyut Festival will include a special event combining the talents of Maureen Nehedar and Rona Kenan. A singer, composer and paytan, Maureen Nehedar has conducted research at the Hebrew University on the sacred and secular music of Iranian (Persian) Jewry. Joining her is Rona Kenan, one of Israel’s leading singers and songwriters. Together they will give an intimate performance of contemporary songs and age-old piyutim (which Maureen has rescued from oblivion) in a soul-stirring vocal combination.

Thursday, February 9, 2012, Brodt Center auditorium, at 9 p.m.
Tickets: NIS 60, NIS 40 for students (on presentation of a
student card), may be purchased from Castel *8965.
